Cold Storage AS/RS — Automated Cold Warehouse

Automated cold warehouse: automation from -30 °C for refrigerated chambers

Shuttle robot for automated cold warehouse and cold storage — DELIE ASRS
DELIE

STOKA es el representante oficial exclusivo de DELIE en Argentina y Chile.

Technical description

DELIE cold-storage AS/RS systems are specifically designed to operate in temperature-controlled environments between -30 °C and +4 °C with no performance degradation. Automation in cold chambers not only increases storage capacity by 40–60% vs. conventional systems, but also reduces door-opening time and thermal load, lowering the refrigeration system's energy consumption by up to 25%. All electrical, mechanical and communication components are certified for continuous cold operation.

How it works

01

Design for temperature control

Cold stacker cranes and shuttles incorporate heaters in the electrical cabinets, synthetic low-temperature lubricants, special seals on motors and encoders, and low-temperature cables. The control electronics operate in a tempered area outside the chamber.

02

Thermal load reduction

Automation eliminates the need for operators to remain inside the chamber during long shifts. Access doors only open for pallet movements, and the outer buffer system allows pallets to be prepared at room temperature before entering the refrigerated warehouse.

03

Temperature control by zone

The WMS records the required storage temperature for each SKU. The system can manage multi-temperature within the same facility: frozen zones (-25 °C), refrigerated (+4 °C) and tempered (+15 °C) with the same control software.

DELIE technology in Argentina

DELIE — official STOKA representation

DELIE has more than 150 installations in refrigerated warehouses in Europe, Asia and America. The cold-specific design is not an adaptation of the standard system: it is a dedicated product line with components certified for temperature-controlled operation. STOKA offers complete sizing including the impact on the existing refrigeration system.

DELIE has more than 1,000 active installations in over 30 countries. STOKA is the exclusive representative in Argentina: engineering, installation and local technical support without depending on overseas factory lead times. Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How much energy does an AS/RS save vs. a conventional cold warehouse?

The thermal load reduction from shorter door-opening time and fewer people in the chamber generates energy savings of 20 to 30% in the refrigeration system. In a 2,000 m² chamber with two-shift operation, savings can exceed USD 30,000 per year, significantly improving project ROI.

Does AS/RS installation in cold storage require special civil works?

The slab must be level (tolerance ±5 mm over 5 meters) and have adequate load capacity for the stacker crane bases (calculated from the system weight). If the chamber already exists, STOKA evaluates on-site feasibility. The installation is coordinated to minimize the chamber's out-of-cold time.

How many operators are needed in an automated cold chamber?

An automated cold chamber with AS/RS runs with 1 operator per shift in the outer buffer zone (room temperature). Without automation, the same chamber requires 3 to 5 operators working in the cold with special clothing. Reduced cold exposure eliminates the risk of occupational illness and the high staff turnover typical of this environment.

Does the ASRS system apply to my facility if I already have cold chambers running?

Yes. DELIE designs the AS/RS to integrate into existing cold chambers. The STOKA team makes a technical visit to measure the chamber, evaluate the slab, the refrigeration system and access constraints, and then presents a proposal adapted to the available space.
